Urvashi played Kameshwaran's love interest Thirupurasundari,[16] this being her second Tamil film after Mundhanai Mudichu (1983). She dubbed in her own voice at Haasan's insistence.[3][17][18] Khushbu was cast as Raju's love interest Shalini after a meeting with Arunachalam's son Subbu.[2][19] Rupini played Madan's love interest Chakku Bai.
Dasari Narayana Rao edited the film. He had earlier also edited Mundhanai Mudichu. Chitti Babu handled the cinematography, which was his first Tamil film.[6] R. C. Kamalakannan was the production manager.[6] The art director was B. K. Karthik.[6] Ravikumar was the executive producer.[6] Haasan wrote the story and screenplay with Vetrimaaran.[6] It was produced by AVM Productions, under the banner of AVM Naada Jannal.[6] The film was shot in the villages of Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Madurai, Kumbakonam, Arakkonam, Nagercoil, Karaikudi and Chennai.[6] The first schedule of the film was held in Chennai in June 1986.[42] It was also the first Tamil film to be the first to be shot completely in the digital technology, using the Arri Alexa camera.[6] The final length of the film is 95 minutes.[43]
Haasan began the film's post-production in July 2014.[9] He frequently went to Chennai's Sathyam Cinemas to watch the film being edited.[11] According to Haasan, he was ordered to stop his work on the film after the Tamil Nadu government accused him of using the film's theme to promote the Aryan race.[9][11] On 22 July 2014, a special screening of the film was held at the National Film Archive of India in New Delhi.[47] Despite the controversy, the producers planned to have the film released in May 2015.[47] However, Haasan was apprehensive about the reaction the film would receive.[47]
For the Tamil version, the script was written by K. Bhagyaraj. It was made in a different style to the original, and contained only seven songs. The film was later dubbed in Telugu, with the same title, as Michael Madana Kamaraju, with the Telugu dubbing provided by Yuvan Shankar Raja.[37] 827ec27edc
